Honing – Internal and External

At Technoplating Group, honing is an essential precision process used to optimize surface characteristics and dimensional accuracy. Whether applied internally or externally, honing allows us to achieve extremely fine tolerances, excellent cylindricity and low surface roughness — critical factors for high-performance mechanical components.

Our capabilities include both internal honing (ID) and external honing (OD), making us one of the few providers in Europe to offer external honing as a specialized service. This positions us uniquely to serve industries that require maximum roundness and precise finishes on both the inside and outside of cylindrical components.

External Honing – A unique surface solution

External honing is a rare and highly specialized process — and one of Technoplating Group’s unique offerings. While most surface finishing techniques target internal diameters or flat surfaces, external honing focuses on refining the outer diameter of cylindrical parts with unparalleled precision. This technique uses a honing tool with fine abrasives to correct shape deviations, improve roundness and reduce surface roughness on the external surface. Unlike grinding, external honing follows the contour of the part making it ideal for:

❖   Correcting roundness

❖   Post-coating correction after hard chrome, laser cladding or thermal spraying

❖   Achieving ultra-smooth finishes for sliding, sealing or bearing surfaces

❖   Minimizing heat input, preventing thermal distortion

External Honing – Essential preparation and finishing for EHLA Laser Cladding

External honing is a critical process at Technoplating Group, especially when combined with EHLA laser cladding. Before cladding, external honing ensures that shafts and cylindrical rods are perfectly straight and round, providing the ideal surface geometry for applying a smooth even clad layer. Thanks to the use of special grinding stones in our honing machines, external honing also allows for efficient removal of old coating layers or worn material — preparing surfaces quickly and precisely for recoating.

This makes external honing indispensable both as a pre-treatment, ensuring perfect roundness and optimal conditions for laser cladding and as a post-treatment delivering the required surface finish and dimensional precision. By combining external honing with EHLA laser cladding we create components that offer outstanding wear and corrosion resistance, while maintaining strict geometric tolerances — a unique capability that distinguishes Technoplating Group in sectors where top-tier quality is needed.

Internal Honing – Cylindrical surfaces

Internal honing (ID honing) is a well-established process used to finish internal cylindrical surfaces such as bores and tubes. By using a honing head, we remove minimal material while refining surface texture and improving form accuracy. This process is widely used for:

❖   Improving cylinder bore geometry for better sealing and sliding

❖   Post-plating correction after hard chrome

❖   Reducing friction and improving lubrication properties

❖   Restoring worn or damaged bores

Whether applied as part of a repair or in the final phase of production, internal honing ensures consistent surface quality, concentricity and dimensional accuracy deep within the component.
